Condition: Prebyacusis
This is most common cause of hearing loss with age. The inner ear hair cells slowly degenerate over time leading to a loss of functional hearing in both ears. You may be struggling to listen, especially in crowded areas or turning up the volume on your television to hear better. Although we may lose our hearing with age, some may still have good hearing even in their later years as the rate of hearing loss is genetically pre-determined.
Solution: The most non-invasive solution to treat hearing loss is with use of over-the-counter hearables, that will work if you have a mild to moderate hearing loss.
Condition: Chronic Tinnitus
Tinnitus is a symptom and usually a sign that your hearing needs to be assessed by a health professional who has good knowledge on hearing matters. This phantom sound is usually subjective (only you hear it) but sometimes can be objective (other people hear it too). We tailor treatment plan for each patient. Tinnitus is a very heterogenous problem, which means that there isn’t one solution that will work for all patients, but there will always be something that works for someone.
Solution: Most of the time, augmenting your hearing hearables will help to reduce tinnitus perception. If we treat tinnitus as an annoying candle in a dark room, turning on the lights (hearing more and brighter) will reduce the contrast with the candle (tinnitus).
Condition: Noise-induced hearing loss
Damage from loud sound exposure is cumulative like radiation and its effects may only be seen after some time. Early detection and prompt understanding of this condition is important for hearing conservation and noise-induced hearing loss prevention. If you have been exposed to loud music, industrial or occupational noise, it is advisable to come in for further assessment. Noise-induced hearing loss can be diagnosed with a good history and a diagnostic audiometric exam.
Solution: Hearing conservation with noise-induced hearing loss prevention techniques and strategies. Education on the importance of protecting your ears from further damage is important. Use of ear plugs with a good fit helps to ensure reduction in noise which can be dangerous to your ears.
Condition: Hyperacusis
Hyperacusis is an uncommon hearing disorder where everyday sounds are perceived as uncomfortably loud and sometimes painful. People with hyperacusis might find normal sounds, like conversations, running water, or even the rustling of paper, unbearably loud. Often this is idiopathic (without a known cause) and patients will have reduced loudness discomfort levels (LDLs) when evaluated with audiometry.
Solution: Treatment includes cognitive behaviour therapy and graded exposure to offending stimulus with sound therapy.
